Sword Infantry: Sword infantry is usually known by their attack capabilities, compared to spearmen's more defensive skills. So in short while they have no advantages from the phalanx formation they are more flexible and are able to respond to a number of threats better. While not as lethal as pikemen against horses or infantry units when attacking head on they are able to move faster and are better for screening for enemy horsemen as they can catch up to them. Spearmen like pikemen carry stabbing weapons into battle but their weapons are much shorter but also more muneverable. Once the formation has been broken pikemen are rather weak one on one unless if they are elite units like Spartans. Infantry will pay a high price to break through their front ranks as well! While these units are amazing in the front they are vunerable to being flanked, as they are slow and make a large mass they are extremely vunerable to missile fire especially when they stay in phalanx formation to move. They can form phalanx formation that present a row of sharpen pikes in the front which is lethal to calvary. Use missile cavalry to weaken the enemy then finish them off with a thunderous charge by their superior shock cavalry.Pikemen or Phalanxes carry long pikes into battle. Nomadic factions are very interesting, it's all about cavalry, no infantry to really speak of. The key is the cavalry and missile troops. Some have decent cavalry but most have limited options.Įastern factions, for the most part, do not have top tier infantry, might be good enough to hold a line but it won't be the reason you win battles. Germanic factions can actually win via fear and morale braking if you choose the right units. It's very important you charge your enemy, even in a defensive battle as a barbarian faction. All have various cavalry and skirmisher options to help assist the main line, Sparta being the least varied of the bunch.īarbarian factions' infantry mostly rely on the shock value of their charge to win the day. Sparta is mostly just spears, while some others have more pike options. I suppose the Hellenic nations might have the best spear and pike armed infantry overall. Giving you plenty of time to flank and charge with lighter troops or cavalry, which Rome has a great variety of with their auxiliary system. And each reform period makes them even tougher. Especially in their staying power in a fight. While units like Oathsworn might be better than even the Praetorians, Rome's base infantry from the very start is better than all the others at their start. Rome probably has the best overall sword armed infantry in the entire game. Think we missed one?
